Step 1
Visit showcases for new homes and new housing developments to see the work of various builders. Ask friends for recommendations.
-
Step 2
Talk with others who have purchased homes or worked with the builder. Explain that you are considering the same builder and that you would appreciate any input. Find out, would they work with the builder again and what they value in a builder.
-
Step 3
Call the local Better Business Bureau, (BBB) and check the record of complaints filed against the builder. Determine the rating received by the BBB and refrain from selecting a builder with multiple complaints.
-
Step 4
Check the reputation of the builder. Even with a home warranty, complaints are resolved directly with the builder, so the builder's willingness to make repairs is far more important than the warranty.
-
Step 5
Look for builders operating under the same company name for a long time. Steer clear of firms that incorporate under different names and entities.
-
Step 6
Contact the local and National Association of Home Builders. Membership is a good indication of quality of work, and offers some assurance of the builder's standing in the profession.

on 2/25/2009 I recommend that you check out http://www.locateahomebuilder.com, a new unique online home builder directory. It may be a while before there are many home builders listed.
