How to Use Aromatherapy to Calm a Baby

Take advantage of the soothing therapeutic affects of aromatherapy. Scientifically proven to trigger the brain to release soothing hormones, aromas such as lavender can be integrated into a baby's life. Use the tips below to calm a baby using aromatherapy.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Massage the baby on a regular basis with a small amount of lavender oil. Gently rub a small amount of lavender on the baby's head, back, abdomen and legs for a few moments each time. This should be a special time for bonding, so the setting and mood needs to be relaxing.
Step2
Buy pre-blended bath mixes especially for soothing babies. Some calming aromas that may be included are chamomile and apricot. Lavender can be added to the bath also, with just a few drops of lavender oil.
Step3
Spread the smell of lavender in the baby's room, or all around the house. It can have soothing effects on the whole family. Use a scent diffuser or a lavender mister. It can also be used in the car.
Step4
Add lavender oil directly in to the water when washing the baby's clothes in the laundry. The baby will constantly smell the calming scent on the clothes and the crib sheets.
Step5
Mix a small amount of lavender oil in the diaper cream used when changing the baby's diaper. The lavender will sooth the baby's skin in addition to leaving a fresh scent.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember babies need one-third the dose of lavender that adults use in bathwater or in mixtures.
