Checkers Motor Corporation was founded in 1922. American manufacturing went through a big boom in the 1920s and taxis were a large part of that expansion. Checker Taxicab in Chicago became a monster business by buying up smaller taxi businesses. Soon Yellow Cab and Checker Cab were the largest taxi companies in America.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide if you want to buy a checker cab through auction or from a private dealer.

  2. Step 2

Find the real reason the owner wants to sell the checkered cab. If it was their source of income, ask why they want to sell.

  3. Step 3

Check the history of the checkered cab. Make sure that it hasn't been in an accident where it was totaled and then repaired. Also make sure it didn't come from an area where floods are common.

  4. Step 4

Ask questions about the cab's maintenance. Also, if you want to use the checkered cab for income, check out the area—find out if there is a lot of competition in the neighborhood.

  5. Step 5

Examine the interior, exterior and engine of the cab. Look at all repair work for a quality job.

  6. Step 6

Discuss the purchase of a checkered cab with friends and family. Any large investment should be discussed with your loved ones.

  7. Step 7

Communicate any concerns about the condition or history of the cab. If the answers are satisfactory make a purchase offer and if accepted buy your checkered cab.

Tips & Warnings
  • Go back to the year the car was made in order to get an accurate history of any accidents or water damage.
  • Make sure body repairs are of metal not putty—your car will last longer.
