Sparkling crystal is beautiful to look at, but care must be taken when you clean crystal glassware. Crystal bowls, vases, decanters, actually anything made of crystal, are very fragile and can chip or crack very easily. To keep your crystal glassware in pristine condition for many years, careful washing is essential.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crystal
  • Sink
  • Heavy towel or rubber mat
  • Water
  • Mild handwashing liquid
  • Large pot or second sink
  • Drying rack
  • Lint-free towel
  • White vinegar (optional)
  1. Step 1

Fold a heavy towel or a rubber mat and put it into the bottom of your sink or dishpan.

  2. Step 2

Fill the sink with hot water and add several drops of mild hand washing liquid. You do not want to create excessive soap suds.

  3. Step 3

Submerge the crystal piece into the hot water and wipe with a soft cloth.

  4. Step 4

Rinse the crystal piece in a large pot of hot water with a towel on the bottom or in a second sink, if available, making sure to rinse thoroughly. Thorough rinsing will prevent spots from forming if air dried.

  5. Step 5

Rinse thoroughly to prevent spots from forming.

  6. Step 6

Allow the crystal to air drain on a rack, or on a folded towel on the counter.

  7. Step 7

Dry the crystal using a lint-free cloth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add a little white vinegar to the rinse water for a beautiful sparkle.
  • Use a soft, well-lathered shaving brush to clean areas that are deeply etched.
  • Remove dried egg from crystal glassware by rubbing the area with a slice of lemon.
  • Never use an abrasive cleaner or scouring pads on crystal as it can damage the surface.
  • Never put lead crystal in a dishwasher as it will dull the surface. It is best to always handwash all crystal.
