How to Obtain a Disabled Parking Permit in Washington

You can apply for disability parking placards or license plates if you are a disabled resident of the state of Washington and meet the disability requirements specified in the Department of Licensing (DOL) regulations. The primary disability condition is that your mobility is impaired. You need a licensed physician to certify the nature of your disability and whether it is temporary or permanent.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Washington DOL website to review the qualifying conditions and verify that you meet the requirements. Acute sensitivity to light is also a qualifying condition.

    • 2

Download and print the Disabled Parking Application for Individuals form 420073. Complete the information required in the applicant section of the form.

    • 3

Select the type of permits that you want to receive. You have the choice of either one or two placards that hang from your rear view mirror, one set of disability plates, or one placard and one set of plates. Persons with special plates can request a disabled parking tab for the plate and one placard. Permits, with the exception of a temporary placard, must be renewed after 5 years.

    • 4

Give the application form to your physician so that certification of the disability can be completed. Your physician also designates whether the disability is temporary or permanent. Your physician must estimate the duration of the temporary disability, not to exceed 6 months.

    • 5

Mail the completed and certified application to the DOL Individual with Disabilities Section at the address shown on the form. There are no fees charged for placards and tabs; however, disability plates have a fee charged. In addition to your placards and/or plates, you will receive an ID card within 2 to 3 weeks.
