How to Tour the Skyline Drive

Virginia's Skyline Drive is a national treasure. The drive spans the state from Front Royal in the north to Rockfish Gap in the south, and winds through scenic areas of Appalachia. A tour of the Skyline Drive can be a great experience and gives a stellar view of the natural resources Virginia has to offer.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive the length of the parkway. There are many interesting scenes and breathtaking views from overlook points along the way. The Rocky Top and Hogback overlooks are not to be missed.

    • 2

Check out hiking trails. The Appalachian Trail is accessible from the Skyline Drive in more than one location. Other hiking trails can be found near overlooks and visitors' centers.

    • 3

Check out the Luray Caverns. Just 10 minutes from the central entrance to the drive, you'll find this immense display of underground spaces beneath the Blue Ridge Mountains. Guided tours introduce visitors to the natural wonders of the cave system, including pipe organ stalactites.

    • 4

Check out visitor centers like the Dickey's Ridge and Humpback Mountain centers, where you can tour old buildings and learn about the history of Appalachia.

    • 5

Pace yourself. It's a long way across Virginia, so take time to stop and explore natural trails and parks. With extra time, you can explore small towns near the drive, with their own attractions like vineyards, antique stores and other interesting shops. Making your way slowly along the drive gives you a well-rounded view of the natural scenery and the culture of Appalachia.

Tips & Warnings

  • National Park areas have very strict rules about moving plants and wildlife into or out of the parks. Be aware of regulations before picking a bunch of wildflowers for a souvenir.
