How to Get a Runner in from Third

With a runner standing 90 feet. away at third base, the batter must get him home. Fortunately there are some adjustments a hitter can make to drive the runner in.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Avoid taking a called third strike by widening the strike zone. There are many ways a runner can score from third on a batted ball (error, fielder's choice, hit, sacrifice). Your coach would much rather see you go down swinging than watching a pitch go by with a runner on third.

  2. Step 2

Look for a pitch up in the zone. A long fly ball will allow the runner at third to tag up and score. Don't be overly aggressive though. Swinging at a baseball way out of the strike zone will only play into the pitcher's game plan.

  3. Step 3

Hit the baseball to the right side of the infield. If the defense is playing back, the runner from third should be going on contact and score easily.

  4. Step 4

Think quick hands. This will shorten up your batting stroke increasing the chance that you'll make contact.

  5. Step 5

Choke up on the baseball bat. This will provide better bat control and allow you to wait longer before committing your swing.

  6. Step 6

Widen your stance. This will shorten your hitting stride, providing better balance and a more compact swing.

  7. Step 7

Try to hit the baseball back up the middle. This will keep you from opening up or committing your swing too soon. It also will help you focus on using the whole field.

  8. Step 8

Learn to bunt. In the right situations, a surprise bunt can bring home the runner.

  9. Step 9

Practice the techniques mentioned above during batting practice. Game situations are not the time to try out a new swing.
