How to Build a Custom Bookcase
Bookcases give you valuable storage space as well as a place to keep your books. The following guidelines are for a simple bookcase, 72 inches tall. You can modify this custom plan to fit your space requirements.
Things You'll Need
- Table saw with dado head cutter
- Hammer
- Screwdriver
- Screws or nails
- One 12-foot long 2-by-10 piece of wood
- Enough 1-by-10 wood for your desired shelving
- One panel of ¼-inch plywood
- Sandpaper
- Wood stain
- Paintbrush
Instructions
-
-
1
Decide how many shelves you want in your custom bookcase. Also, determine the width of your bookcase.
-
2
Purchase the lumber. Pine or fir works. Buy enough 1-by-10 lumber for the number of shelves you have chosen.
-
-
3
Measure your shelf spacing on each side. Allow 3 inches from the floor for the lowest shelf. Measure your tallest books, and allow space for them on the bottom shelf.
-
4
Cut the two side pieces. Using the dado head cutter attachment on your table saw, cut a ½-inch deep by ¾-inch wide groove to hold each shelf.
-
5
Allow 3 inches extra for the top shelf piece as it fits over the two side pieces. Cut the remaining shelves.
-
6
Put the shelves in place. Either nail them in or use wood screws.
-
7
Lay the bookcase on its front. Measure the back. Cut the plywood to fit. Nail or screw it in place.
-
8
Sand the wood as needed. Stain and finish your bookcase as desired.

Tips & Warnings
If you prefer hardwood for a custom look, avoid knots in the wood. Hand-select your wood pieces.
