Legally, you are entitled to copies of your credit information, as well as easy methods for disputing any errors you may find on your credit report. Experian is one of three main credit reporting companies. They work with AnnualCreditReport.com to make sure you can access your credit score.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit AnnualCreditReport.com (see Resources below). The website will give you the opportunity to request your annual free credit report from Experian.

    • 2

Select your state and choose the option to request a report. The website will require you to enter personal information, including your Social Security number and contact information.

    • 3

Verify your identity by answering questions about your credit history. If there are any problems verifying your identity, you will be asked to submit verification through the mail. Trouble verifying your identity does not necessarily mean that there is an issue with your credit report. All it means is that the computer system wasn't able to confirm your identity without human help.

    • 4

Receive a hard copy of your credit report. If AnnualCreditReport.com asked you to submit verification through the mail, you will receive a mailed copy of your credit report within 15 days.

    • 5

Contact Experian directly to dispute any errors on your credit report (see Resources below). Errors can range from identity theft to clerical issues. Experian allows you to file disputes online and check them through their website. Experian also has a legal responsibility to respond to your dispute within 30 days.

Tips & Warnings

  • According to federal law, you are entitled to one free copy of your credit report from each of the three credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax and Transunion) every year.

  • Your Experian credit report may differ from your credit reports at Equifax or Transunion. Many companies only report to one of the three companies.

  • Take advantage of the free copy of your Experian credit report every year to check for errors and see if you need to improve your credit score.

  • AnnualCreditReport.com can also help you place a fraud alert on your credit report if you find that you have been a victim of identity theft.

  • If you have already requested a copy of your credit score from Experian this year, you may be charged for additional copies.
