Because CDG (compact disc plus graphics) discs are primarily used for karaoke music and lyrics, many CDG players are already capable of functioning as karaoke machines. If your CDG player is not capable of operating as a karaoke machine, however, or if you just want to soup it up, you can easily do so with accessories.

Things You'll Need:

  • Key-changing machine

    Use a Karaoke Mixer

  1. Step 1

Shop for a digital mixer to connect to your CDG player and turn it into a karaoke machine. Digital karaoke mixers are high quality machines that will enable you to sing along with karaoke CDs in the CDG format.

  2. Step 2

Connect your CDG player to your digital karaoke mixer to get started. You will need to connect the two machines through the audio input and output jacks, using the cables provided with the karaoke mixer.

  3. Buy a Key-Changing Machine

  4. Step 1

Research key-changing machines to add to your CDG player. A key-changing machine is used to adjust the pitch of music and vocal tracks on your karaoke CDs. Using a key changer can help you sound like a more polished karaoke singer by modulating your vocals.

  5. Step 2

Mount your key changer directly onto either your CDG player or your karaoke mixer. Most key changing units come with all the hardware you need to mount it onto your other karaoke components.

  6. Add an Amplifier

  7. Step 1

Research karaoke amplification units. Karaoke amplifiers act as both karaoke mixers and as a source of sound amplification for external speakers, so this one unit will effectively turn your CDG player into a karaoke machine.

  8. Step 2

Opt for a karaoke amplifier with voice elimination capabilities to be able to remove vocals from CDG discs. Karaoke amplifies with voice elimination features are usually the more expensive models, but they make it possible for you to use your own favorite discs.

  9. Step 3

Connect the karaoke amplifier to your CDG player in the same manner you would connect a regular karaoke mixer. The cables you will need to connect the two machines will usually be included with the karaoke amplifier.

Tips & Warnings
  • Expect a key-changing machine to cost about the same as a karaoke mixer.
  • Never place your CDG player or karaoke mixer directly on a carpeted floor. Static caused by people walking on the carpet can cause electrical problems in the units. Carpet may also cover ventilation slots on the machines and cause overheating.
  • Reduce the risk of electric shock by disconnecting both your CDG player and your karaoke mixer while you are setting them up.
