You don't need to buy a karaoke machine to have fun singing along with your favorite songs. You can turn your computer VCD player into a karaoke machine by installing a karaoke software program. You could also use a karaoke mixer to make either a computer VCD player or a stand alone VCD player into your own personal karaoke system.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Karaoke video compact discs (VCDs)
  • Karaoke mixer
  • VCD player

Turn Your Computer VCD Player Into a Karaoke Machine

Step1
Check your computer to be sure it is capable of playing video compact discs. You can download VCD software from numerous sites online that will help you use your computer for karaoke.
Step2
Place a karaoke VCD in your computer's CD or DVD drive.
Step3
Purchase or download karaoke software for your computer. Many different varieties are available online and basic models are quite inexpensive. Follow the instructions provided to install this software.
Step4
Order VCD-format karaoke tracks online from retailers who sell the VCD karaoke software.
Step5
Burn each of your VCDs into your computer's hard drive. This will allow you to organize your karaoke tracks. Once the tracks are on your hard drive, you can also perform your karaoke without having to put an actual disc into your CD or DVD drive.

Create a Karaoke Machine With a Karaoke Mixer

Step1
Shop for a karaoke mixer. Karaoke mixers combine the voice and graphics data from your VCD player and enhance the sound quality. Karaoke mixers are available with a wide variety of features, such as echo voice effects and delay functions.
Step2
Check each karaoke mixer model to ensure that it is VCD compatible. Some mixers are set for use with CDG discs rather than VCD discs.
Step3
Connect the karaoke mixer to your computer's VCD player. Insert the mini-jack cable right and left audio in cables to the correct jacks on the back of the karaoke mixer. Insert the other end of the mini-jack cable to the mini-jack portal on your computer.
Step4
Connect your karaoke mixer to your stand-alone VCD player to turn it into a karaoke machine. Simply attach the machines together via the audio input and output jacks, using the cables provided with the karaoke mixer.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can transmit your karaoke visuals from the computer to your TV by modifying your computer with a VGA card. This card basically adds a "video out" jack to your computer.
