The iPod is one of the most versatile pieces of audio equipment on the market today. Given its high-quality sound, you may want to enhance its entertainment value by connecting it to your home audio system. This is a common practice, and can be done easily with a few simple steps. All you need is your iPod and a connecting cable.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Y cable with three male jacks
Step1
Get a Y cable that will connect the iPod to a receiver or audio system.
Step2
Look for a connection on your system that is labeled AUX-IN or CD-IN. As long as you have the spare jack or input connection, most audio or stereo systems will connect to an iPod.
Step3
Insert the single male end into the earphone jack of the iPod.
Step4
Insert the two plugs into the right and left inputs on the audio system or receiver.
Step5
Turn on the iPod and home audio system. It doesn't matter which piece of equipment you turn on first.
Step6
Switch your audio system to "auxiliary." You should then be able to hear the music from the iPod.
Step7
Set the iPod volume to less than half its maximum capacity and adjust the overall volume through the home audio system. Depending on the stereo system you have, you may need to set the iPod volume to more than half to get adequate sound.
Step8
Try using a docking station specifically designed for your iPod if you don't have an adequate home audio system. This is another way to transmit sound throughout the room.

Tips & Warnings

  • To ensure compatibility with your audio system, pick the iCable made for iPod. This cable was formerly called the Monster Cable.
  • Connect your iPod to your home audio system to recharge it while you listen to your favorite tunes.
  • Music from your iPod is not the only thing you can hear through your home audio system. Try channeling iTunes from your computer to the audio system.
  • You may find that the quality of the music stored on the iPod may be improved through the audio system.
  • All-in-one boom boxes or portable stereos may not have an input connection for an iPod.
  • Avoid using any phonograph connections, which are usually marked PHONO-IN.
  • Ignoring the audio system controls and simply adjusting volume through the iPod can cause sound distortion and damage the speakers.
