on 2/4/2009 Your statament is wrong. I have iPhone 3G v2.2.1, airplane mode does allow you to use wi-fi. Which you can use this setting when you travel outside of the U.S. and you can use the airplane mode to avoid the roaming charge but continue to use the wi-fi hot spot for internet.
