Clogged drains are normally from built up grease and hair. Instead of using harsh chemicals, you can protect your drains and the environment by using an old but very effective formula from Grandma using just regular household items.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup of Salt
  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • Pan of boiling water

Step1
Pour 1 cup of salt, and 1 cup of baking soda into the side of the sink WITHOUT the garbage disposal. (Any of the dry material that doesn't get dissolved can get stuck in your garbage disposal blades.)
Step2
Pour a large pan or kettle of BOILING water into the sink. The boiling water will dissolve the salt and the baking soda.
(This process is designed to be done when water is still flowing through your drains.)
* IF your drain is totally clogged, add the salt and the baking soda into the boiling water before pouring anything into the standing water. If it does not clear, add more boiling water (without any more salt or baking soda.) Give 3 minutes to react. Repeat adding boiling water after the first 3 minute interval.

Even if the clog does not open up immediately, the mixture and the boiling water will work away at it.
Step3
Follow the boiling water with 5 minutes of hot water flowing from the sink to flush the mixture well down the sink. This step is important to be sure that there is no remaining dry mixture left in your pipes.

This process will cut through the hardened grease in your pipes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Follow this proceedure monthly when there is no clog. It will keep your drains flowing without problem.
  • Cleaning the "green" way will keep corrosive chemicals from destroying your metal pipes.
  • Remember. Grandma says, "A little salt and a little baking soda a month will keep the plumber away!"

on 11/4/2007 Hey, I just tried this with a slow sink drain in the bathroom. With the smaller drain size, I used about 1/4 cup of salt and baking soda chased with a teapot of boiling water and it opened right up! Fantastic solution without $6.00 worth of chemicals!
