There's more to taking an herb than just popping a pill and following the directions on the package. You need to learn about the side effects, too.

The fact is, there are plenty of herbs that can't be taken under certain situations or for certain people. For example, I have a problem retaining water. Licorice makes the water retention worse, so I avoid it.

Another classic example is for people who are on drugs such as coumadin. Herbs that contain vitamin K, such as stinging nettle, need to be avoided because they don't mix well with the drug.

The good news is that there are places you can go to find the information. There are several places you can go to find the information. This article talks about the most popular.

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet connection
  • Library
  • Book store
  1. Step 1

You can look online using your favorite web browser. Make sure the sites you are browsing have good reputations. I have success searching under the keywords "(name of herb) side effects" and "(name of herb) contraindications."

  2. Step 2

Your local public library should also have some books on herbal medicine where you can look. You may also be able to find information in magazines or in special online resources that your library has access to.

  3. Step 3

It is a good idea to have at least two books in your home that list the side effects and dangers of taking a particular herb. Browse what the store has to offer to make sure it gives a complete list.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also ask an herbal expert or herbalist for advice.
  • Make sure you consult a doctor before you take any herbal medicines just to make sure.

on 9/18/2008 Hi Katherine,
Good advice in the article. I was wondering if you would consider adding a site to the resources that has a lot information about side effects. It took about seven months of research to put it together and many people send in their comments about effects to add to the pages.
Thanks for your time.
Mike
