How to Speed up your Broadband Connection ( Cable )

Rate: (8 Ratings)

With more and more people getting broadband connections in their homes, some systems are being stretched. Typically your cable modem gets an IP (internet protocol) address every 24 hours. And everyone assigned to a particular block of IP's gets a certain amount of bandwidth. If several people on your subnet are pulling streaming video and or anything heavy that eats up bandwidth, your connection is going to be slow.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • PC connected to the internet through a cable modem and or broadband router.

Step1
Log into your broadband router (wired or wireless), using the documentation that came with it.
Step2
Most home routers have a STATUS page similar to this one. Find the "Status Page" for the router.
Step3
Notice all the IP addresses are empty Press the "DHCP Release" button.

This may take a few seconds to respond.

When the page responds, the IP Address, Gateway, and DNS fields should be empty.
Step4
Notice IP subnet is different than before Press the "DHCP Renew" button.

This may take a few seconds(I would recommend waiting at least 10 seconds).

If the IP addresses are still empty DO NOT PRESS the DHCP renew button just yet,

Press the refresh button on the browser after 10 seconds to see if the router has been reassigned a new IP address.

Tips & Warnings

  • This can be done from almost all home type routers that allow user configuration.
  • Most systems are setup to move you to a new subnet if your primary subnet is overloaded.
  • Does not work on DSL connections as they are for a prescribed speed based on the package you purchase.
  • Does not work on DIAL UP
