Want to multiply those favorite flowers?
Save the seeds in an easy way that works.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Annual or perennial flowers that produce seedheads.
  • Small paper bag
  • Twist tie
  • Cutting tool
  • Envelope
  1. Step 1

When the petals are gone from the flower seed head that you want to save, just place a small paper bag over the seed head.

  2. Step 2

Secure the paper bag to the stem of the flower with a twist tie.

  3. Step 3

When the seeds begin to drop into the bag, cut the seed head (including the bag), off the plant.

  4. Step 4

Bring the bag indoors and open the paper bag.

  5. Step 5

Let the opened bag sit for a few days until the seeds, bag and seed head appear to be completely dry.

  6. Step 6

Break the seed head open and remove the seeds.

  7. Step 7

Again for good measure, dry the seeds in place for a few more days.

  8. Step 8

Place the dried seeds in a paper envelope.
Label, date, and store the seeds in a cool, dry place until spring planting time.

Tips & Warnings
  • A great way to share your plants with friends.
  • Tuck a few seeds into a thank you note or birthday card.
  • If your seeds are not thoroughly dry they will mold and should be disposed of in your garbage. Note: Do Not toss diseased seeds into your compost pile.
  • Some flowers that produce great seed heads are: Sunflower family, Marigolds, Zinnia, Gaillardia, Coreopsis, Cosmos, and Echinacea (Coneflower).
