Step1
First I recommend you to go to www.makeaplatformbed.com and get a copy of "How to Build a Platform Bed" ebook. If you are a first time bed builder this book will tell you everything you need to know about bed design, construction, tools selection and operation. It will also give you the instructions to build any size bed you like (king, queen, double, single etc.)
Step2
Calculate all your timber sizes.
You will need to cut timber for the head board, foot board, and side rails.
The sizes will differ depending on the size of the bed you wish to build. Follow the bed calculator you get free with the www.makeaplatformbed.com e-book. The calculator will give you all the lengths you need in seconds. It saves hours alone.
Once all your timber is cut to size. Take the sharp edge off the timber using a hand plan or electric planner. This will make your bed user friendly.
Step3
Drill 10 mm dowel holes in your head board, foot board and associated cross rails. Apply glue to the dowelled ends and attach the cross rails. Clamp the cross rails using long strap clamps and leave for at least 5 hours for glue to dry.
Detail dowelling information and the exact process can be found in "How to Build a Platform Bed guide".
Step4
Attach the side rails to your head board and foot board using high quality bed brackets. Bed brackets are the most important component of your beds overall strength. Bad brackets will cause your bed to be shaky and noisy causing immense frustration.
For great no wobble bed brackets see www.makaplatformbed.com/brackets1.htm
Step5
Cut your slats stops and fix to the inside of your side rails using wood screws and glue. The slat stops will provide a ledge for your slats to sit on.
Also cut your slats from 1” by 2.5” solid timber. You will need roughly 18 slats for a normal size bed (king, queen, double size bed) cut to fit tight between
Step6
Design and construct the back drop of your head board. Here is where you can get creative.
You could make a padded board, which would bed frame by the head board. You could add timber vertical slats to give your bed a shaker look or you could use a screening material like brushwood or weaving.
You’re limited only by your imagination. So get creative!
Step7
Finish you bed by sanding and applying stain, varnish, or paint.
