My blog about how to play a guitar from the beginning to advanced.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
There are some things you need to know before you learn how to play a guitar. I will cover that in this post and continue in future posts so visit often and keep in touch.
First you need to get a guitar, you might be able to borrow one and that’s fine but it may not be in very good condition and it’s probably out of tune. Do you know how to tune a guitar? So did you think this would be as easy as the ads on the internet suggest? This will take a bit of effort on your part so decide how much you want to play guitar. That said, it’s really not that difficult. This blog will cover all of this in this and future postings so don’t worry.
Step2
Let’s assume you don’t know anyone you can borrow a guitar from. So, how to buy a guitar? What type of guitar can you afford? You may buy a used guitar cheaply but there is a reason for that low price, many have problems. So you should educate yourself about guitars. Study this advice and look around the web, ask a friend, take guitar lessons and ask your instructor, learn all you can and then decide what type of guitar you want. If you decide to take lessons (a good idea) they can usually provide a guitar for you to use during the lesson. Try to use different ones until you find one you are comfortable with. That guitar is probably for sale because most guitar stores offer lessons and you will probably go there for your lesson.
Step3
Your teacher might not be one of the sales staff, if so they can offer you unbiased advice, but even if they are a salesperson they will suggest the best they can offer for your budget. You want to get the best guitar you can afford. Once you have a guitar in mind bring a guitar playing friend to check the guitar for you. Your first guitar will probably be an acoustic guitar and I think that’s a good idea, you won’t need to buy an amplifier. If you want to play hard rock you can get one of the electric guitars later when you have some skill and knowledge. I think electric guitars are easier to play so once you can play the acoustic guitar, playing the electric will sound as if you have suddenly improved.
Step4
If you don’t want to take guitar lessons or can’t afford them you can always use this site. I will post every couple of days and usually you will need to practice that long to be ready for the next lesson. However you can progress at any speed you like. If you are in a hurry you can always buy a book and learn from that. I think an ebook is better because a lot of them contain sound files and videos. One good source is the Jamorama series of ebooks. The first one I would get is jamorama acoustic guitar available on the web.

Tips & Warnings

  • I bet you'll want to buy a strap for your guitar so you can play standing like a rock star.
  • Buy a supply of picks, medium is probably your best bet until you decide what you like.
  • You should probably buy a decent case for your guitar to prevent damage.
