How to Have a Relaxing Vacation

How to Have a Relaxing Vacationthumbnail
A spa visit or massage can make any getaway more relaxing.

People vacation for a variety of reasons: Some for excitement, some for romance, some just to explore new places. Some folks are just seeking the serenity that everyday life doesn't always provide. If you're one of the latter, here are some thoughts on enjoying a getaway free of stress and strain.

    Instructions

      • 1

Choose a nice countryside or island escape, free from traffic, beeping cars and hordes of people. Sure big cities like New York and Los Angeles offer plenty to do, but they're far from relaxing.

      • 2

Get your ducks in a row to avoid any unwanted surprises. Make sure your lodgings are in a quiet spot, your room has a bath, no construction or renovation is going on there--check out the situation before you book anything.

      • 3

Consider staying at or near at a spa, or at least find a lodging that has a hot tub or Jacuzzi. There are few experiences as soothing as a nice massage or long warm-water soak.

      • 4

Make your dining reservations in advance, so you won't be scurrying around trying to plan them out while on your getaway. Ask for a quiet table away from the front door and the kitchen.

      • 5

Bring along some reading materials, a deck of cards and other simple diversions. Avoid making any big plans aside from your dining reservations.

      • 6

Leave behind your contacts with the outside world if possible, such as your cell phone, laptop computer and other electronic devices. Resist the urge to check in with work or other responsibilities.

      • 7

If planning a tropical escape, consider an 'all-inclusive' resort that allows you to leave your wallet in your room and drink and eat to your heart's content. Bring plenty of sunscreen, as a serious sunburn can turn your vacation from relaxing to rotten in a hurry.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Try limiting your getaway to a solo trip or just with your significant other--the more moving parts the more tension likely to arise.

    • Make sure to leave your home, pets or other responsibilities with someone you know and trust completely. You don't want to have to worry about or constantly check in on things back at the home front.
