Learning how to unicycle can be one of the most rewarding endeavors of your life. With a few tips and a unicycle to call your own, you can be on your way to one-wheeled bliss in no time.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • unicycle
  • grit
  • time
  • band-aids
  1. Step 1

Get a unicycle. It's not a bad idea to borrow one from a friend to try it out. Learning to unicycle is no weekend activity, and you should make sure you're in it for the long haul before investing in your own.

  2. Step 2

If you bought a unicycle, it's important to inflate the tire to the correct pressure. This varies, but in general, you want it to look a little flat when you're sitting on it.

  3. Step 3

Find a flat, open space to learn. I started in the winter (I live in Minnesota), so I had to practice in a cluttered garage. This resulted in bruising.

  4. Step 4

It's best to start next to a railing. Hold the railing with one hand, the unicycle with the other, and climb on.

  5. Step 5

Ouch. Now get back up. This time, make sure the pedal you step on first (one at a time, people) is as low as it will go, otherwise you'll spin the tire and fall like you just did.

  6. Step 6

Once you can balance without moving while holding the rail, lean forward and try to pedal.

  7. Step 7

Ouch. Shake it off. You've basically got it, now it's just a matter of learning how to fall, turn, mount, jump, and do a bunch of cool tricks.

  8. Step 8

Once you've mastered all that, it's time to join the circus.

Tips & Warnings
  • Unicycling can be dangerous. You should probably wear a helmet or something.
  • Always unicycle with a buddy
  • Don't tell people you can ride a unicycle until you've learned to ride it. Because they will make you show them and this can lead to embarrassment. Yes?
