Things You'll Need:
- unicycle
- grit
- time
- band-aids
-
Step 1
Get a unicycle. It's not a bad idea to borrow one from a friend to try it out. Learning to unicycle is no weekend activity, and you should make sure you're in it for the long haul before investing in your own.
-
Step 2
If you bought a unicycle, it's important to inflate the tire to the correct pressure. This varies, but in general, you want it to look a little flat when you're sitting on it.
-
Step 3
Find a flat, open space to learn. I started in the winter (I live in Minnesota), so I had to practice in a cluttered garage. This resulted in bruising.
-
Step 4
It's best to start next to a railing. Hold the railing with one hand, the unicycle with the other, and climb on.
-
Step 5
Ouch. Now get back up. This time, make sure the pedal you step on first (one at a time, people) is as low as it will go, otherwise you'll spin the tire and fall like you just did.
-
Step 6
Once you can balance without moving while holding the rail, lean forward and try to pedal.
-
Step 7
Ouch. Shake it off. You've basically got it, now it's just a matter of learning how to fall, turn, mount, jump, and do a bunch of cool tricks.
-
Step 8
Once you've mastered all that, it's time to join the circus.
