Prevent Puffy Eyes and Dark Circles

Okay, so you have rings around your eyes like a pair of tires. What now? Many things can make the eyelids and surrounding skin swell. Tired eyes can be dry, itchy, irritated, red, burning and watery. And I haven't even mentioned puffiness and those lovely dark circles. Don't fret: Try out these tips and get that fresh face back with ease.

From Quick Guide: Guide to Puffy Eyes
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pair of eyes
  • Whole milk
  • Green or black tea
  • Large cotton balls
  • Fresh greens and fruit
  • Drinking water
  1. Step 1

Eat plenty of foods rich in eye-friendly nutrients: Beta-carotene, vitamin A, C and E, plant pigments in blueberries, bilberries and carotenes in red, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables. This will improve the circulation as well as improve your vision. Avoid salty foods and don’t add salt to food.

  2. Step 2

Be gentle. We get one pair of eyes, so treat them right. Don’t pull or rub your eyes. The thin skin under your eyelid is easily irritated and inflamed. Certain ingredients in cosmetics are known irritants and can sometimes be responsible.

  3. Step 3

Swollen eyelids? Dip cotton balls or cosmetic squares into icy cold whole milk. Lie down and apply soaked cotton to swollen eyelids and leave for 5 to 10 minutes.

Don’t like cold milk, try this de-puff eye compress. Take some chilled green (or black) tea and large cotton balls. Moisten the cotton balls (2 for each eye) with the chilled herbal tea. Lie down and place them over your eyes for two minutes, then a warm one for one minute, then a cold one again. It'll boost the local circulation around the eyes.

  4. Step 4

Sleep on your back with one or two pillows. Splash your eyes with cold water after getting up in the morning to reduce local fluid retention.

  5. Step 5

Swollen eyes and dark circles can sometimes be the result of toxin built up in the body as well as dehydration. Be sure to drink plenty of water daily in order to flush toxins and excess sodium from your body. When the body is dehydrated, the kidneys try to retain water, which results in puffiness.

Tips & Warnings
  • Causes of puffy eyes: Extensive exposure to heat and sun, pre-menstrual fluid retention as well as many skin creams and oily make-up removers all promote overnight puffiness. And crying is a great emotional release, but it sure makes the eyes go puff.
