The Sutro Historic District of California is in San Francisco County, south of the Golden Gate Bridge at the northwestern tip of San Francisco. Adolph Sutro was a former mayor of San Francisco and had owned 1/12 of the land in the City and County of San Francisco where he created some famous structures. It's a great place for a day trip for you and your family.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Enjoy a fine dining experience in one of the three restaurants within the Cliff House that overlook the Pacific Ocean. Sutros and the Terrace Room take reservations while the laid back Bistro restaurant is a first-come-first-serve set up. Call (415) 386-3330 to book and get other information.

  2. Step 2

View a community of sea lions on the rocks below the Cliff House. These animals consider Seal Rock their home. You can also see California Pelicans, dolphins and migrating whales in the ocean.

  3. Step 3

Visit the remnants of the Sutro Baths north of the Cliff House. It was a 25,000 person swimming area and museum. Built in the 19th century, it housed six saltwater swimming tanks, restaurants and dressing rooms. In 1966 the building was destroyed by fire.

  4. Step 4

Walk, bike or picnic through the Coastal Trail of Sutro Heights Garden. Enter at 48th and Point Lobos Avenues. You can see stone satyrs, flowers and beautiful trees that invite you to picnic under them on the peaceful lawns.
