How to Get a Teaching License in Maryland

A Maryland teaching certificate and license are one in the same for public schools. All teachers, administrators and specialists that deal with children in Maryland's public school sector must hold a teaching certificate. The federal "no child left behind" movement is enforcing minimal guidelines to ensure that all students get qualified instruction in public schools. Here's how to get a Maryland teaching license.

      Choose from the five teaching certificates that are available in Maryland. Maryland provides steps to total certification so that while you are in teacher training you can still be certified. There are deadlines and requirements for each certificate.

      Apply for the Conditional Certificate if you are still working toward the requirements for a professional certificate. It is valid for two years.

      Pick the Standard Eligibility Certificate if you are not currently employed but meet all the standard eligibility requirements. This certificate is good for five years.

      Submit an application for the Standard Professional Certificate I. It is much like the Standard Eligibility Certificate, but with this the applicant is already employed by a local school district. All applicants must have at least a bachelor's degree from an approved college or university in an educator program. Pass both PRAXIS exams and a criminal background check.

      Finish at least 3 years' verified teaching experience, at a Maryland public or accredited nonpublic school while you have your SPC I. Then apply for the SPC II. You must also have 6 semester hours of accepted credit and a personal plan to get their Advanced Professional Certificate (APC).

      Work toward the APC, which is for those applicants that have 3 years of full-time employment in a school-related field, a master's degree or 36 post-baccalaureate credit hours, as well as an SPC I or II certificate. You may also choose to take get your National Board of Professional Teaching Standards certificate. The NBPTS is extremely accommodating to anyone who will be moving from state to state and wants to teach.

  • Those who are applying for certification in the state of Maryland and are using their experience as a qualification to get their teaching certificate do not need to take the Praxis I and II Exams.
