For hikers seeking a strenuous challenge and solitude, few hikes in Texas can compare with Rosillos Peak. Donated to the Park Service and added to Big Bend in 1984, Rosillos Peak receives few visitors. The closest road comes within only 5 miles of the range, making access difficult. Hiking to the peak should only be attempted by fit, experienced hikers during the cool season.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Good hiking boots
  • National Park topography map
  • Food and water
  • Compass

Step1
Drive from park headquarters at Panther Junction toward Marathon about 23 miles to the dirt road turnoff. Look for a sign to Terlinqua Ranch. You should use a high-clearance vehicle for this road.
Step2
There is no trail for this hike. Follow the old road southeast toward the mountains. When the old road ends, follow the wash into the canyon. Lost Spring will be at the bottom where the canyon forks.
Step3
Turn left at the fork in the canyon, heading northeast. Do not cross the park boundary on the south side of the canyon.
Step4
Begin to climb up the right canyon wall to the ridge top. Follow the ridge top to the northeast, keeping Trough Canyon to your left in sight. The ridge steepens toward the summit.
Step5
Continue across an easy saddle to the northeast that brings you to the main summit. Return the via the same route. Backcountry camping isn't allowed, so plan to return the same day.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bring plenty of water for this 12-mile hike. There's no dependable water source on the hike.
