How to Train a Difficult Dog

Having a disobedient dog can make life stressful. A dog that jumps on house guests, soils the floor or chews up everything is not what you expect when you bring home an adorable puppy. A dog who already has bad habits can be difficult to retrain. Start as soon as you see the first signs of a problem.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consult with a dog trainer for advice. It's best to enroll in some private lessons so you get one-on-one time. This enables the dog to focus better because there are fewer distractions. After your dog has mastered the basics, move on to group classes so he can learn to obey around distractions.

  2. Step 2

Practice for at least 15 minutes every day. Training classes alone are not going to cure the problem. Classes will help you learn how to train your dog, but you need to follow up at home.

  3. Step 3

Teach your dog that nothing in life is free. Have him sit before you put down dinner, let him outside, or attach the leash for a walk. This will help him to see that you are the pack leader.

  4. Step 4

Exercise your dog every day. A tired dog is a happy dog that is less likely to misbehave. Working breeds and terriers require several hours of activity every day. Check with your veterinarian for exercise recommendations.

  5. Step 5

Show off your newly trained dog. This will help other dog owners to realize how pleasant it is to have a well behaved dog and encourage others to train their dog.

Tips & Warnings
  • During training it helps to use a lightweight leash so you can immediately correct undesirable behavior.
  • If your dog is displaying signs of aggression, take him to a trainer that specializes in aggression. This isn't a problem you can tackle on your own.
  • Never let your dog ignore you. If you tell him to sit and he doesn't respond, gently make him sit.
  • Never hit your dog. It won't help the problem.
