A treasure chest is a place to hide your most valuable possessions. Whether it's ancient buried treasure or those love letters that you want to keep close forever, building a treasure chest is a great way to make sure that those things most important and valuable to you are kept safe and hidden. Here are some tips to follow when building a treasure chest.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sturdy box
  • Bolt or padlock
  • Fabric, cushioning or dividers
  • Waterproofing treatment
  1. Step 1

Choose the right box. Your treasure chest must stand up to the test of time, the weather elements and maybe even being buried. It must also house a lifetime of treasures and secrets, so it must be sturdy and strong but also have plenty of space. Find a box made of a durable material, like wood or metal, that will be long-lasting and protect all of the materials inside (see Resources below). Make sure it is roomy enough to store everything that you treasure.

  2. Step 2

Secure your treasure. Purchase a high-quality bolt or a padlock with a key that will be kept in your possession. Screw the bolt and plate or the plate for the padlock over the opening of your treasure chest so that it is locked and secure. If you are using a padlock, use one that has only one key, and keep the key in a location known only to you. If you are using a combination lock instead, write the combination down so you don't forget it, and hide the combination where it cannot be found.

  3. Step 3

Protect what is inside. Depending on what kind of treasure you are putting in your treasure chest, you might need to further augment the inside of your treasure chest. Line it with fabric or cushioning if you are hiding money so that its clinking and clanking doesn't give away the secret. If you are hiding crown jewels instead, put dividers inside the treasure chest that will keep each piece of jewelry separate and prevent them from bumping into one another.

  4. Step 4

Protect your treasure chest from the elements. If your treasure chest is wooden, keep it preserved by using a waterproofing treatment on its outer surfaces. Use a thin, clear waterproofing paint and coat the outside of your treasure chest, paying special attention to corners and lid edges. This protects your treasure chest from water or dampness in the ground once it's buried.

  5. Step 5

Deny its existence. The best way to keep your treasure all to yourself is to make sure no one else knows it exists. If you are asked about the existence of the treasure chest or the treasure inside, play dumb. Act as though you have never heard of the treasure chest and that the very idea of it is preposterous.

  6. Step 6

Bury it deep. Once you've fortified your treasure chest, bury it where it can never be found. Choose a secret location that is difficult to get to and that no one will associate with you. This will help keep the location of the treasure chest from being found out.
