How to Learn Braille

Braille is the system used for those who are blind or have visual impairment to read and write information. People use Braille throughout the world. This is a universal system where embossed dots are created on a page. You can learn to read the dots by scanning them with your fingers to figure out the words or letters that make up words.

Instructions

    • 1

Use one of the online tutorials available for learning Braille. These tutorials are often audio interactive and offered in multiple languages. Along with these tutorials, you will learn how to begin reading Braille as a sighted person, then move to reading through sensory activity with your fingers.

    • 2

Attend a class at a university, school for the blind or even your local library. Some medical practices also offer courses on learning Braille so that those without impairment can read and understand the same system as their friends and family who rely on Braille for reading and writing.

    • 3

Work with someone who knows the system best, either a blind or a visually-impaired person. People who use this system regularly often understand how difficult it can be to learn something new. They can assist you in a way that no other person could because of their adapted abilities.

    • 4

Practice, practice, practice. Begin with a simple learning exercise, perhaps even something self-taught like the alphabet or numerical system. Gradually work your way up to reading words and sentences. Small steps over time will lead to improved ability and accuracy.
