Traditionally junkyard dogs have been viewed as mean, mangy beasts. In reality a junkyard dog can be a well trained animal who knows how to protect its territory from unwanted trespassers. Here are a few ways to assist you when buying your own junkyard dog.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Negotiate with your local junkyard owner. Want a junkyard dog, then buy one from the junkyard. Try a few junkyards before you find an owner willing to sell.

  2. Step 2

Buy a mutt. Most junkyard dogs are mutts. Purchase a mutt that looks vicious. Enhance the junkyard dog image by chaining the dog to a dog run or by adding a spiked collar. Consider letting the dog get muddy and mangy.

  3. Step 3

Train a puppy. Buy a dog and train it to protect its territory. The dog should know its territory and be able to chase both people and animals out. It's essential that the puppy learns to distinguish its territory. Post a sign that warns people to be cautious and wary of your dog.

  4. Step 4

Purchase a sculpture. Get a junkyard dog that requires no upkeep or care--buy a junkyard dog sculpture. These metal dogs are made from recycled car parts and are designed to resemble a variety of mutts. You can purchase a sculpture online from a website. See Resources below. Be sure to ask if the sculpture endures the outdoors without rusting if you plan to put your dog in the yard.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some owners don't want to part with their pets. If the price is right, the owner should be willing to part with the dog, especially if you plan to give the dog a good home.
