Patching the aluminum siding on your home can be difficult because of how the panels interlock. It is possible to fix the siding with a little effort, some time and good weather.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Utility Knife
  • Siding Nails
  • Hammer
  • Safety Gloves
  • Aluminum for Patch
  • Adhesive Caulk
  1. Step 1

Cut out the damaged section where the patch needs to be put in. This will require a few cuts with the knife as aluminum siding is thick.

  2. Step 2

Cut out a patch panel that will overlap the hole by 2-4" all the way around so it no longer shows and will protect your house as it should in all weather.

  3. Step 3

Sand the cut patch piece with metal grade sandpaper so it will adhere easily and not leave any section exposed to the elements.

  4. Step 4

Remove the nailing flange from the new panel you are patching in. Make sure the new panel is touching the one above on the underside.

  5. Step 5

Cut the flange off the upper siding piece so it will bond with the new piece.

  6. Step 6

Caulk the patch piece with the aluminum piece above it with adhesive.

  7. Step 7

Connect the bottom part of the aluminum patch piece to the house. Nail ring shank siding nails through the nailing strips on the siding.

  8. Step 8

Slide the J-channel over the nailing strip below it so that no water can get underneath the siding.

  9. Step 9

Caulk the side seams as well to protect your house.

Tips & Warnings
  • It may be difficult to match your siding with exactly the same color as you currently have. This can be due to changes in colors over the years or fading from exposure to weather conditions.
