Moissanite was discovered in the late 1800s by a French scientist, Dr. Ferdinand Frederick Henri Moissan. The jewel was determined to be very rare and thus almost an impossibility for jewelry. However, laboratory-engineered moissanite is now very popular and is quickly becoming a substitute stone for diamonds, often mimicking the same cuts, clarity and brilliance as a genuine diamond.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Contact your nearby jeweler to inquire about their selection of moissanite. If they do not carry this stone in their stock regularly, determine if they have options for special ordering pieces. Keep in mind that since you will not see the piece in person, you take the chance of purchasing a piece that may not be exactly what you hoped.

  2. Step 2

Search through the hundreds of moissanite jewelers online. There are numerous websites that specialize in this type of stone and can craft it in any type of jewelry piece you can think of, including rings, bracelets, earrings, necklaces and watches.

  3. Step 3

Look for a specific piece of jewelry that appeals to you. You should have quite a few options available and if the jeweler is willing, you may be able to customize your piece to meet your exact preferences.

  4. Step 4

Choose a piece that reflects the brilliance of the moissanite through light. If your piece allows light to flow through the stone, the overall shine will be incredibly noticeable.

  5. Step 5

Select a piece with a warranty, just as you would for any other piece of jewelry. While you may have a more difficult time securing insurance on a moissanite piece, you should have a warranty that protects your jewelry from damage over time.
