How to Be a Mercenary

You've tried working on principle, but have finally realized that what you're really interested in is money. Your true calling is to be a mercenary. Governments and corporations all over the world are looking for people they can pay to do their dirty work. Prove yourself worthy of the mantle and you can join the well-hidden ranks of mercenaries.

1. Do a stint in the military. Become familiar with combat zones and how they operate. Accept any special training offered, particularly related to handling weapons. Observe higher ranking officers as they carry out their duties. Learn everything you need to know to become a one-man army.

2. Disavow all political and national affiliations. When you become a soldier for hire, you can't let your own beliefs get in the way. Become a person without country or cause to make it easier to consider every offer.

3. Distance yourself from everyone you know. Mercenaries operate underground and you can't be tied up with people calling to see where you are at any given moment. This also protects you when you get into a scrape, since the enemy won't know who to go after to make you talk.

4. Advertise your services. Take out an ad in "Soldier of Fortune" magazine stating that you are looking for work. Make it clear that your expertise goes to the highest bidder.

5. Report for duty and begin building your reputation. Complete the tasks assigned to you quickly and cleanly. Refuse to perform additional work before renegotiating the terms of your contract.

• Turn down invites to company or military functions. Avoid forming any personal relationships because you never know when your current employer becomes your enemy.
