If you want to be a ping pong pro, holding the handle like an ice cream cone is simply not going to cut it. You must experiment with the different kinds of grips to determine what kind of player you are going to be. Here are some tips on how to perform the penhold grip for a ping pong bat or paddle.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visualize yourself holding a pen with which to write. This is the basis for the penhold grip. It allows great flexibility in the wrist and is extremely popular among Eastern ping pong players.

  2. Step 2

Grip one side of the racket with your index finger and thumb toward the top of the handle where the handle meets the paddle or bat.

  3. Step 3

Curl your remaining fingers along the backside of the paddle or bat. An alternative to this grip is to spread your fingers along the backside.

  4. Step 4

Resist using the backside of the paddle. This grip is specifically meant to use one side of the paddle. Using the backside could result in the ball hitting your finger making the point invalid or worse, the ball flying off into a far direction where the point cannot be saved.

Tips & Warnings
  • This grip is for the strong forehand player who loves to add spin to the ball. This is not for the defensive player who looks for weakness, as you essentially have only one side of the blade with which to hit the ball.
