How to Do a Blanket Stitch
The blanket stitch is used to stitch edging, traditionally around a blanket. You can also use this stitch to appliqué pieces of fabric to a quilt or any other piece of material. The blanket stitch is ideal for stitching in curves. After following these few easy steps, you can use the blanket stitch to add beautiful detail to the edges of your next craft project.
Instructions

1
Start by bringing your thread to the front. With the blanket stitch you always stitch left to right.
-
2
Next, go up to the right (diagonally) about ¼ of an inch. Insert the needle from front to back to front again, bringing it straight down to line up with the bottom edge, all in one single motion.
-
-
3
Make sure the point of the needle comes out over the thread to finish the first stitch. Pull the needle until the stitch loop is tight against the emerging thread.
-
4
Move over ¼ of an inch and repeat Steps 2 and 3 until you have met your desired length. Each stitch secures the previous stitch.
-
5
Make a small stitch in the back to secure the final stitch.

Tips & Warnings
The length of your stitch may be altered to add detail to the edge of your craft project.
Several pieces of embroidery floss or thread should be used at one time to give definition to the stitch. Choose a thread color that compliments your craft since the stitch is there to add detail.
