Tear gas is a general term that is used to describe several different chemical agents that authorities use to dispense and control crowds. While there is some debate about the intensity and longer lasting effects of the gas, it has become commonly accepted among many governments throughout the world as a humane way to regain control of a hairy situation. Here are some tips on how to recognize tear gas.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Look for riot police reaching for grenades. Tear gas is usually dispensed through grenade form.
Step2
Spot the aerosol cloud. Once the pin has been pulled on the grenade or the shot has been fired from a tear gas gun, a cloud will begin to form. That's the sign to recognize and get out of the area.
Step3
Watch other people for their reaction. If you are toward the back of the crowd or an innocent bystander, watch for people who begin to cough, hack and whose eyes become irritated. Move out of the area immediately.
Step4
Observe the police or government agency that is threatening to release tear gas. They usually give an audible warning with megaphones. Then, if they place gas masks on, get ready, because they are planning to release the tear gas.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have been exposed to tear gas, get to fresh air immediately. Breathe deep breaths and spit out any chemicals. Rinse irritated eyes.
  • If you are indoors and tear gas has been released outside, close all windows and doors immediately and move to the room in your home that is the most airtight.
  • Wash with soap and water. That will commonly dilute and remove the tear gas from your body.
