How to Clean a Hairdryer

A hairdryer is run by a small motor and a heat element. Electricity heats the heating coil, turning the motor on, sucking air into the machine, sending the air over the heating coil and forcing the hot air out the other end. Fuzz that gets caught in the wire screen or filter can make the motor work harder and eventually die. Regular cleaning of the hairdryer adds to its life expectancy.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Unplug the hairdryer. It is dangerous to work on a hairdryer (or any electrical appliance) while it is plugged in.
Step2
Remove the wire screen cover on both sides of the hairdryer. If you cannot remove them, move on to Step 3.
Step3
Vacuum out the wire screens on each end of the hairdryer. The dust buildup should come out easily. Pick additional lint off the wire screens with your fingers. Place the vacuum close to the front and suck out anything that found its way into the hairdryer.
Step4
Clean the filters. Many of the newer hairdryers have a filter that protects the motor from becoming overwhelmed by lint and dust. Wash removable filters with warm soapy water. Let the filter dry completely before reassembling the hairdryer.
Step5
Replace the filter and wire screens. Put everything back in place the way you found it. Make sure everything is clean and dry and then use the clean hairdryer. Repeat as often as necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never immerse an electrical appliance in water, even with it unplugged. Only wash parts that are removable from the appliance.
