Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Know the facts. If your friend is engaging in sexual behavior that is unsafe or unhealthy, get all of the information about the dangers of their behavior before you talk to them. Having the facts about the risks your friend is exposing themselves to will allow you to explain to your friend why you have a legitimate reason for being concerned.
Step2
Express your concern. Your friend is an adult, so you can't tell them what to do, but you can vocalize your concern for their safety. Emphasize that you are not bringing up the subject as a personal attack but as an act of friendship and because you are worried.
Step3
Try to relate. Talk to your friend about why they are engaging in the sexual behavior that you are concerned about. Without prying too much, try to determine what is leading them to engage in this behavior and why they feel the need to do it even though it is dangerous. It is important for your friend to feel that you are not looking down upon them and that you are genuinely trying to help them and understand the situation.
Step4
Suggest healthy alternatives. If your friend is engaging in unhealthy sexual behavior because they are involved with a partner who is doing the same, point out to your friend that this relationship is not healthy and suggest that they put some distance between themselves and their partner. If they are participating in unprotected sex, remind them that there are free health clinics that give out condoms and prophylactics to encourage safe sex. Offer to go with them or drive them to one of these clinics and to accompany them to get tested for diseases if it will help them feel more comfortable.
Step5
Be a friend. Your friend may already recognize that their sexual behavior is unhealthy and has been looking for help to stop. Your confrontation of them about their behavior could leave them feeling guilty or ashamed. Support your friend in their efforts to change their sexual behavior and make sure they know that you are not judging them and do not think any less of them.
