It is not possible to become a NFCC-certified credit counselor without first being employed by a member agency. The warning that says "Do not attempt to get a job as a credit counselor without getting licensed. It will hamper your chances of getting good employment and make you less reputable" is completely untrue. Virtually no one is already certified when they start working for a credit counseling agency unless they were already certified while working for a different agency and their certification carried over. I know this because I am a certified consumer credit counselor. What you *do* need to get a job as a credit counselor is experience in one or more of the following: banking, collections, counseling, and/or non-profit organizations.
