How to Make Hot White Chocolate

A steaming cup of hot chocolate is a favorite winter comfort drink for adults and children alike, but you don't have to use regular chocolate to make it. If you prefer the mellow, creamy flavor of white chocolate, you will love hot chocolate made from a luscious mixture of white chocolate chips and cream.

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 cups half-and-half
  • 12 cups white chocolate chips
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp. nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp. almond extract
  • Cinnamon

    White Hot Chocolate

  1. Step 1

    Combine white chocolate chips and heavy cream in a medium saucepan and heat on low until the white chocolate chips have melted.

  2. Step 2

    Stir in the half-and-half and vanilla extract.

  3. Step 3

    Leave on low heat, stirring occasionally until the mixture is heated through.

  4. Step 4

    Serve in heavy mugs and top with whipped cream.

  5. Spiced White Hot Chocolate

  6. Step 1

    Mix ½ cup of half and half, white chocolate chips, cinnamon stick and nutmeg in a saucepan. Stir over low heat until the white chocolate chips are completely melted. Discard the cinnamon stick.

  7. Step 2

    Add the remaining half-and-half and stir until heated through.

  8. Step 3

    Remove from the heat and add almond extract.

  9. Step 4

    Ladle the mixture into heavy mugs and garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be creative and don't be afraid to experiment with the white hot chocolate recipes.
  • For extra hot white hot chocolate, stir in ¼ tsp. cayenne pepper when you add the vanilla extract.
  • For Christmas white hot chocolate, add ¼ tsp. peppermint extract to the mixture and garnish with peppermint sticks or candy canes. Add a few drops of peppermint extract into the whipping cream for a minty garnish.
  • Garnish the white hot chocolate with shaved chocolate curls or a maraschino cherry for a gourmet treat.
  • For a tasty adult drink, add a schnapps or liqueur of your choice. Butterscotch, amaretto, espresso, crème de menthe, cinnamon or vanilla are all delicious choices.
  • Warm the mug before filling, and the white hot chocolate will stay hot longer.
