How to Fly Flags on a Boat

Flying flags from a boat is a way of communicating and signaling other boaters. Flags can ask for permission to enter a foreign port, identify yacht clubs, tell of distress or of a diver down. Others are for fun, such flags displaying a cocktail glass, fish or the owner's initials. Follow the rules of etiquette when flying boat flags.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the correct size national ensign flag to fly on the boat. This flag should measure one inch long for each foot of boat length.

    • 2

Position the flag at the stern of the boat.

    • 3

Attach the flag with charlevoix clips to the flagpole, stern light pole or antenna. It is very easy to remove and reuse these clips.

    • 4

Hoist the national ensign flag at 8 a.m. and lower it at sunset.

    • 5

Fly the Quebec code flag to request permission to enter a foreign port. It must be displayed from the radio antennae or from the starboard spreader.

    • 6

Mount burgess or pennants to the bow staff. These flags can be flown 24 hours a day.

Tips & Warnings

  • Flying the national ensign upside down means the boat is in distress.

  • Buy the national ensign flag one size bigger if the available sizes do not match the length of the boat.

  • It is considered disrespectful if you fly the national ensign anywhere on a boat except the stern.
