Step 1
Turn it off. When you are finished using your hot plate, shut it off so you won't burn yourself on it.
-
Step 2
Cool it off. After use, be sure your hot plate is cooled to room temperature before storing it away. If you store your hot plate while it is warm, it could start a fire.
-
Step 3
Clean it. Using mild dish detergent and a sponge, wash the plate portion of the hot plate. Wipe the sides clean. Food dried onto the plate can start a fire when the hot plate heats again.
-
Step 4
Check out the cord and plug. Make sure the cord is always in good condition. If it is frayed or cut or the wires are exposed, throw the hot plate away and purchase a new one. Make sure the plug is clean, free of debris and isn't showing any exposed wires.

Step 5
Utilize proper cooking containers. Use pots and pans the same size or smaller than the burner (plate). Use only pots and pans that are resistant to stove top temperatures. You can cause a fire if you use pots or pans that are the wrong size.
