How to Host a Victorian Tea Party

The English custom of serving a formal tea was begun in the late 19th century by the Duchess of Bedford, who wanted an afternoon snack to ward off hunger pangs until the late evening dinner. Pay homage to this Victorian custom by hosting an authentic Victorian tea party. Encourage guests to dress in elegant attire befitting the dignity of this most Victorian custom. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Table Decorations

    • 1

Cover the table with a tablecloth of damask or brocade. Layer with a lace tablecloth on top.

    • 2

Set the table with delicate china decorated with floral pattern, polished flatware and crystal water goblets.

    • 3

Fold linen napkins in the shape of a flower or other fancy fold or wrap napkins with polished silver napkin rings.

    • 4

Place sugar, cream and milk in crystal serving dishes.

    Menu

    • 5

Offer petite finger sandwiches with such fillings as smoked salmon spread, cucumbers, watercress and roast beef with horseradish.

    • 6

Accompany finger sandwiches with assorted cheeses and fresh fruits, such as blue cheese with pears and cheddar with wedges of crisp apple.

    • 7

Offer a selection of two or three classic teas, such as Earl Grey, Orange Pekoe and Ceylon. Serve tea in a china or silver teapot (never from the kettle).

    • 8

Serve traditional British tearoom sweets of scones, with clotted cream and fruit jams.

    • 9

Round out a Victorian tea party menu with classic petit fours, which are delicate bite-sized layer cakes covered with marzipan or fondant.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mix and match china patterns if you don't have a full set. It will still look decadent and beautiful.

  • Cut glass is a pretty and affordable alternative to authentic crystal.

  • Serve all food on silver platters or cut glass trays. Line each serving tray with paper lace doilies and garnish with edible flowers, such as violets and nasturtiums.

  • Victorians never placed flowers on their dining table during meals. They did not want the fragrant blossoms competing with the aromas of the food.
