How to Make a Quick Choucroute

Making a quick Choucroute is not only easy cooking it is delicious. It smells amazing as you cook it and who ever eats it will love it. Making this dinner only takes about 20 minutes to prepare, but it tastes as though you slaved over it all day. An other quick way to make this is to put it in a slow cooker and let it cook all day long.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3/4 pound kielbasa or bratwurst
  • 1 sliced yellow onion
  • 1 peeled, cored, and sliced tart apple
  • 1 pound drained sauerkraut
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 teaspoons caraway seeds
  • 1 teaspoon juniper berries
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 4 smoked pork chops (4 to 6 ounces each)
  • Fresh ground pepper

Quick Choucroute

Step1
Heat the oil in a large frying pan.
Step2
Cut the sausage in half add it to the pan and cook until it has browned on one side. It should take about 4 minutes.
Step3
Turn the sausage over and add the sliced onions and cook for 5 minutes or until they have turned soft.
Step4
Add the apple to the same pan and cook until it is soft. It is usually about 3 minutes.
Step5
Add the sauerkraut, bay leaf, caraway seeds, juniper berries and wine. Put the pork chops in a single layer on the top of all the items in the pan.
Step6
Cook on medium for 10 to 12 minutes so all your flavors will blend together.
Step7
Remove the bay leaf add some ground pepper, if desired, and serve.

Make it in a Slow Cooker

Step1
Cook onions in a frying pan with oil until soft then add the remaining ingredients to the slow cooker.
Step2
Cook on high for 4 hours or 8 hours on low.
Step3
Remove pork chops when done cooking, slice them and return them to the slow cooker.
Step4
Mix everything together and serve.
