How to Build a Cat Tree
A cat tree can save your furniture from the scratching needs of a cat since they're always looking for something to dig their claws into. The problem is store-bought cat trees are never just right. They're too expensive, the base is never sturdy enough and it's hard to find one that fits the layout of your room. Follow these steps to build a cat tree.
Things You'll Need

- Drill bits

1
Connect 2 pieces of plywood together by first gluing them and then drilling in screws. If you're going to build a large cat tree, then it might be a good idea to use a paint roller to apply the glue.
-
2
Attach a lip to the outside of the base by gluing to the edge small strips of wood a 1/2-inch wider than the combined pieces of plywood. This will complete the base of the cat tree.

3
Start to build the cozy apartment area of the cat tree. Use a compass to make circular entrances into the cat tree. For a small cat, a 6-inch hole is sufficient.
-
4
Use a drill to start a small hole in the center. Stick the blade of your jigsaw into the hole and cut the circles. Do this to all 4 sides and the top.
-
5
Glue the sides and top together with wood glue then use a drill to screw them together with wood screws. If you prefer, you may also use a nail gun.
-
6
Carpet the base, inside, top and sides of the cat tree. Use a utility knife to cut away the carpet covering the holes. Secure the carpet using a staple gun.
-
7
Secure the cat tree to the base by turning it upside down and drilling long screws through the bottom.

kassandra55 have you tried to overlap the cylinder with the carpet and staple the carpet to the inside of the cylinder? you will have to make plats that look like a platted skirt but i am not sure of how many you will have to make on the inside to make the carpeted cylinder look smooth on the outside. the overlap portion would need to be at least 3.5 inches to make it look smooth on the edges. you can also try to cut Vs into the portion that goes inside the cylinder to keep the bulk down. -
