When laying tile in custom, intricate patterns, you'll need to use a tile nipper. This allows you to make small cuts for working around areas like the faucet. They do not make smooth edges when they cut the tile, so make sure the cut tile will be in an inconspicuous area or covered with trim or a fixture. Follow these steps to use a tile nipper.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use a china marker and trace the shape you want onto the tile. This allows you to get a more accurate cut rather than eye-balling it.

  2. Step 2

Score the outline using a utility knife. You can also use a glass cutter for this. It's advisable to wear gloves when doing this to avoid slicing your finger.

  3. Step 3

Cut gridlines with the utility knife below the outline. This helps you to take off smaller pieces with the tile nipper making for a smoother cut.

  4. Step 4

Bite off pieces with the tile nipper. Hold it firmly and "nibble" off small pieces until the desired shape is achieved. Be careful because if you take off pieces that are too large you're going to have to start over.

  5. Step 5

Lay the tile. Make sure that the area cut with the tile nipper is laid in an unnoticeable area because the cuts are not smooth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Lay out the uncut tiles first then use the tile nippers to trim the custom pieces.
  • When using tile nippers, pieces will always go flying. Make sure to wear safety goggles and gloves to prevent injury. Do not allow children or pets to linger nearby while working.
