How to Use Healthcare Applications

The President of the United States has said that the adoption of a universal system of electronic medical records will solve the vast majority of America's health care problems. This means that health care applications must be at least a little bit important. Why these applications are not used is a complicated question--one that needs to be solved rather quickly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Realize that the discipline of medicine is the only profession that has not upgraded to some form of computer record keeping. Further realize that the body of medical knowledge is increasing exponentially.
Step2
Run a search on any site for health care applications. Realize that there are a huge number of vendors with proprietary systems of health care applications--including some big players like General Electric. These companies are competing in a cut throat fashion to be the last man standing because there are billions of dollars in the balance.
Step3
Go to the website of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). Drill down through some of its levels to get a sense for the degree of complication that any system must face for the protection of records. This federal act makes health care applications equally complicated.
Step4
Check the websites for leading proponents of electronic medical records (EMR) and health care applications. Note that they do not mention problems with HIPAA compliance. Also notice that the degree of attention required of an average physician's office will be enormous with regard to time, manpower and dollars.
Step5
Check the most recent income data for primary care physicians. Realize that in terms of real dollars, income has dropped 30 percent in the last 5 years. This makes a voluntary participation in health care applications almost prohibitive.
Step6
Turn to some of the online application programs like Epocrates. this program is used in handheld devices. It offers up-to-date information about drug interactions, disease profiles, and it is upgraded on a weekly basis. Participation in such programs may be done with only a nominal expense.
Step7
Come to a final conclusion that while universal EMRs may be a thing of the future, the use of health care applications in clinical information management is alive and well and widely used at the present time.
