How to Drag Race Motorcycles

Drag racing is a big past time for many auto enthusiasts. Motorcycles are less popular then cars but are a big event in drag racing. Motorcycle drag racers have their own sanctioned events around the country where they compete for money and prizes. Learn how to drag race motorcycles by following these steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a track with a drag strip that allows motorcycles to race. Most drag strips are equipped to handle motorcycles but may have certain times or days set aside for motorcycles only.

    • 2

Follow the track rules on motorcycle racing. Helmets are required at every race track when riding motorcycles. Certain types of clothing and shoes must be worn at some tracks. Rules may differ depending on your type of motorcycle and how fast you travel down the quarter-mile track.

    • 3

Prepare your motorcycle for a drag race by having it running properly, having all maintenance taken care of and having the motorcycle clean. Most tracks won't allow a motorcycle or car on the strip if there is mud or oil that could possibly fall off and land on the track.

    • 4

Line up your motorcycle on the track by the lights (called the tree). The first yellow light brightens as your front tire rolls into position. Once the second yellow bulb lights up you should stop. This is called staging. Once both lights are on, you must wait on your opponent to stage.

    • 5

Wait for both sides of the tree to have the staging lights on. After a few seconds, the other lights start to light up. When the last yellow light is on, the green light comes on signaling you to start the race. The best time to start is after the last yellow light and just before the green light.

    • 6

Ride your motorcycle as fast as you can for the entire length of the race. Motorcycle races are normally either an eighth-mile or a quarter-mile in length. Letting up before the finish line causes you to have a slower time.

All motorcyclists, please ignore the previous squid's comments. Racing should be done only at the track.

Yes, you are right in all of your text, but you arent even mentioning the start, which in my opinion is a very tricky one, and i dont mean the time of the start (just before green light), i am refering to the revs that must be hold when you are releasing the clutch. If not done well, the motorcycle will end up on its tail and the rider chasing the bike(IF he is lucky enough). Not to mention racing on the streets where this whole comment is just not helpfull, but most people who read this article are interested in how to become a more effective pilot. Whith pilot i mean the guy who has the skills and the weight, to race on the street. First of all, on the street he best time to start a race is just after orange, and a bit before red, since u cant start with green because the traffic light is turning from read right in to green. Another thing which plays a role at the start is the street q
