Photosensitivity is a reaction that occurs on the skin when a person is exposed to a source of ultraviolet radiation. A normal person's skin tans or burns when exposed to the sun. A person with photosensitivity breaks out in hives or a rash.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit your physician. If you notice that during sun exposure you develop a rash, you need to set up a consultation with a doctor.

  2. Step 2

Undergo any testing that the doctor will perform to confirm photosensitivity. Photosensitivity can be diagnosed through blood and allergy tests.

  3. Step 3

Avoid sun exposure. This is one of the easiest treatment methods for a person with photosensitivity. If you are out in the sun, keep your skin covered under clothing items and wear a hat.

  4. Step 4

Purchase a hypoallergenic sunscreen. If your skin is exposed to the sun, you should put on a sunscreen that protects your skin and not trigger any type of allergic reaction.

  5. Step 5

Treat photosensitive reactions with cold oatmeal baths. If you have hives, a cool oatmeal bath helps relieve the sensitive skin.

  6. Step 6

Take any medications prescribed by your doctor. An antihistamine may be given in order to prevent you from developing a reaction. Corticosteroids may be given to reduce any swelling or itching that may occur.

Tips & Warnings
  • Certain photosensitive reactions are caused by sun exposure while taking certain medications. While on the medication, sun exposure should be avoided.
  • In extreme cases of photosensitivity, a desensitizing treatment option may be required. Within a medical setting, a patient will be exposed in small amounts to ultraviolet light over the course of several weeks.
