Step 1
Check into comedy or acting classes. Many local colleges offer acting classes, and local comedy clubs may be able to give you information on classes. A writing class would also be helpful when you're writing your material.
-
Step 2
Develop your routine. It's best to start with something you know, such as a joke about yourself or something you do. Try them out on family and friends, but it's best to get the reactions of strangers who don't love you and won't care if they hurt your feelings.
-
Step 3
Keep your first set around 3 minutes. That's usually all you get when you start out.
-
Step 4
Ask your local comedy club when open-mic night is, and get your name on the list. You don't have to work at Caroline's or Comic Strip Live. The small clubs are where most comedians get their start.
-
Step 5
Get a few open-mic nights under your belt, and ask the clubs where you've worked if they have any sister clubs that might be interested in having you come do a set.
