Things You'll Need:
- Paper or cardboard
- 3/4 yard of canvas, denim or heavy twill
- 1/3 yard of coordinating heavy fabric
- Needle and thread or sewing machine
- 2 buttons
-
Step 1
Make a pattern for the collapsible bucket. Use cardboard, a heavy paper or fabric to cut out the measurements. The lining needs to be 29 1/4 inch-by-9 inches. Shell A is 29 1/4-by-6 1/2 inches. Shell B is 29 1/4-by-3 1/2 inches. Make 2 handles at 25-by-2 1/4 inches. Use a pie pan to make 2 circular bases at 9-inches in diameter.
-
Step 2
Cut the material according to the pattern's measurements. Use 1/3 yard of heavy fabric for shell B. Use 3/4 yard of your chosen fabric to make the rest of the bucket.
-
Step 3
Create the handle. Sew a 1/4-inch seam around the sides, leaving one end open. Turn the fabric inside out and sew the end closed.
-
Step 4
Fold the fabric for shell A in half lengthwise. Sew a 1/2-inch seam on one side. Fold shell B the same way and sew one side.
-
Step 5
Match up the sewn edges. Sew them together. Unfold the fabric and iron the seams down.
-
Step 6
Secure 4 straight pins in the bottom circle. Space the pins evenly around the edge.
-
Step 7
Place the shells on top of the bottom and pin together with the straight pins.
-
Step 8
Attach the base by sewing a 1/4-inch seam around the bottom.
-
Step 9
Line the handle up with the shell's seam.
-
Step 10
Sew in the lining. Attach it at the seams around the top and bottom of the bucket.
-
Step 11
Turn the bucket right side out.
-
Step 12
Attach a button to the side of the bucket directly across from the handle. Line the handle up with the buttons to mark their position and make button holes in the handle.
-
Step 13
Fold your bucket. Unbutton the handle and press the bucket flat with the handle on the top laying flat. Fold the undersides in and wrap the handle around to hold it.
